He is a former mayor of Addis Ababa (2003–2005), as well as a former State Minister of Works and Urban Development. He is currently a Minister and Special Advisor to the Prime Minister, the board chair to the Ethiopian Railway Corporation and the deputy chairman of the board of directors of Ethiopian Airlines. Elected as part of the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front coalition, on March 31, 2005 Arkebe was named "African Mayor of 2005" by Broadcasting Network of Africa.
